HARTLEY WINTNEY
Old English/Middle English 'hart [= mature male red deer] wood' (cf HARTLEY MAUDIT and WESPALL). Early in the 13th century the place is distinguished as 1236 'Minechenherteleye'='nuns' Hartley', 1270 'Hurtle Monialum'='clerical Hartley', from the nunnery Wintney Priory in the same parish. The name of the priory was later applied instead. 'Wintney' (1139=1161 (1337) 'Winteneia') appears to mean 'Winta's island' or 'raised land in marsh'.
