Hypothetical Old English 'Haeselord'='hazel point'; the point (cf SPITHEAD) juts into Portsmouth Harbour. Later spellings show confusion with Middle English 'worth'='curtilage'; some South Country dialects lose 'w' before round vowels and show 'd' for Middle English 'th'.
