HAWKLEY
Old English/Middle English 'hawk clearing or pasture'. Hawks hunt in open land rather than woods thus less likely 'hawk wood'.

description
Hawkley
The place is described in text Cobbett 1830

refce: Cobbett 1830
... the danger of breaking my neck at Hawkley and of getting buried in the bogs of Woolmer Forest. My route was through East-Meon, Froxfield, Hawkley, Greatham, and then over Woolmer Forest, (a heath if you please) to Headley.
...
... These hangers [Hawkley Hanger] are woods on the sides of very steep hills. The trees and underwood hang, in some sort, to the ground, instead of standing on it. Hence these places are called Hangers. From the summit of that which I had now to descend, I looked won upon the villages of Hawkley, Greatham, Selborne and some others.

Hawley
- silly mistake

The finger post at SU755317 on the B3006, on the right going north towards Selborne, reads 'Hawley'; someone has made a mistake! Seen 22.2.1999
