HAWLEY, modern parish carved out of Yateley
In view of the absence of early spellings, what follows is uncertain. Perhaps hypothetical Old English/Middle English 'Healhleah' or 'Healaleah'='clearing or meadow of the nook(s)'. The word 'healh' was often used of an outlying end of a parish; the situation of Hawley in relation to Yateley is comparable to that of 'Tottenham Hale' in relation to Tottenham (Middlesex). This fact also makes it eligible to include 'healas' in the sense of 'dry ground in marshes' (of the river Blackwater). It is also adjacent to the long established county boundary between Hampshire and Surrey a further application of the term 'healh' being 'projecting corner of an administrative unit'. There is a slight blip in the river boundary near Hawley Park. On all this see Gelling (1984: 100-11).
