HENGISTBURY HEAD, west arm of Christchurch Harbour
Old English 'fort of Heddin'. The same name is found in a document of 877
(12th century transcript) (BCS 544, S 1277), from Nursling, in the place name
'hedenesdene'. A continental relative also appears in the name of the Baltic
island 'Hiddensee' for which there is Norse saga evidence. Renaissance
antiquaries preferred 'Hengist' a relatively known quantity (1611 'Hengestbury
heade').
