HILSEA
Ekwall is probably right in suggesting (in the Dictionary of English Place
Names) that this is hypothetical Old English 'Hylesieg'='holly island', though
relatives of the supposed word are known only in the continental Germanic
languages. Since holly (Ilex aquifolium) prefers chalk, there may be a reference
to sea holly (Eryngium maritimum). 'Ieg' may also mean 'raised land in marsh',
which would suit here though the rise is not large.
