Coates 1989 HILTINGBURY, suburb of Chandler's Ford Apparently Old English 'fortification or manor house of the Hyltingas', a tribal name meaning 'dwellers at the hylte' or 'woodland'. This is highly doubtful both topographically and historically but the rare element 'hylte' is found also in SHIRRELL HEATH. A safer etymology might involve a Middle English formation meaning 'manor house (ie: the former 'Hiltonbury' OS 1 to 63360 map) at 'Hyltinge'' a place name fossilized in the dative case and meaning 'at the woodland'. |
