HINTON AMPNER
Old English 'high farm', in an oblique case form. The place is on the western end of a ridge overlooking the source of the river Itchen near Cheriton.
'Ampner' is added in Tudor times (1544 'Amner') which is a form of 'almoner'. The manor was held by, and paid the expenses of, the almoner of St Swithin's Winchester.
