HOLDENHURST
The later forms suggest hypothetical Old English 'Holegnhyrst'='wood(ed hill)
marked with holly'; but it is strange that there is no trace of the medial '-n-'
till the end of the 14th century. Perhaps the modern form of the word without
'-n-' was current early, and the two forms were in dialect competition at some
period. The forms with 'd' do not appear till the late 18th century.
