The 'holm' -names are a notorious problem, but often include Middle English 'holm' a development of Old English 'holegn'='holly', as seems certain here (1371 'Holneslegh' 1665 'Holmesley'). Middle English 'wood of (the) holly(-tree).' The nearby 'Thorn Hill Holms' are dense holly groves.
