HORDLE
Hypothetical Old English 'Hordhyll'='(treasure-)hoard hill'. The events which gave rise to this name are lost for ever. In English place names 'hord' may be associated with words for barrows and supposedly haunted places. 'Hyll' never appears to mean 'barrow'. More prosaically, there was an Old English word 'hordaern'='storehouse'; this name may be elliptical for hypothetical 'Hord(aern)hyll' but that is pure speculation.
The name 'Golden Hill' (OS 1 to 63360 map) in the same parish is tantalizing, and its relation to the parish name is unknown. It may be a deliberate allusion to the fruits of place name research.
