HOUGHTON
Old English 'farm by the heel or spur', a common name type. The projecting feature at Houghton church does not look significant, but there is a tongue of land jutting Northeast in the North of the parish towards Stockbridge. 'Houghton Drayton' (1267 'Drayton') contains an element, Old English 'draeg' sometimes meaning 'portage'. A well marked route, now with bridges, crosses the 3 branches of the Test here to King's Somborne where the hundred met. No ford is on record here, so goods would have to be manhandled to King's Somborne not taken by cart if the route via Horsebridge was to be avoided twice the distance, round the far side of John of Gaunt's deer park. 'Draeg' may, however, mean 'place where boats can be dragged up out of the water'. There is a further 'Drayton' (995-1006 (14th century transcript) 'Draegtune)' in Barton Stacey, where again the Test flows in several channels.
