ICKLAND ROAD
The Roman road from Winchester towards Cirencester (Margary 43) appears in some medieval records as 14th century 'Ikenyldewey' and the like, the name being borrowed from the real 'Icknield Way' (partly Margary 333) in East Anglia, whose name is highly obscure. That name may have been purloined in the hope that the privileges of the latter, one of the royal highways, might accrue to the former. The modern name, corrupt, is found in 1795.
