INCLOSURE
There are numerous places in the New Forest containing this element, always spelt with an 'I-'; eg 'Appleslade Inclosure' (Ellingham) 'Wilverley Inclosure' (Rhinefield and 'Irons Hill Inclosure' in Denny Lodge parish. The inclosures themselves are unusual. The typical enclosure in the landscape is a marked off piece of agricultural land with the woodland beyond the fence. The New Forest inclosures are pieces of managed woodland fenced off to keep the commoners' animals from grazing seedlings or browsing young growth. Enclosing portions of royal forest was illegal for any reason till 1483, but Acts of that year, of 1698, 1808, 1949 etc established and confirmed the practice in the interests of timber provision. Many inclosures were made especially after 1808 and in 1850-65, amounting to the legal maximum granted to the Crown of 16,000 acres. For another New Forest term see HATT.
