ITCHELL MANOR in Crondall
Later spellings suggest a compound involving 'hill', but the earliest form
'(at) the sources of Icael', suggest a river name, ie: that of the stream that
rises North of Itchel Home Farm. Whatever the origin of this, which is quite
uncertain, it seems to share a root with ITCHEN. The name is pre-English, and
must have passed through a Primitive Welsh hypothetical form 'igel'.
