KEMPSHOTT, submember of Dummer parish, now district of Basingstoke
Apparently Old English 'Cempan sceat'='warrior's corner', with some 14th century and later forms suggesting 'sciete' with the same meaning. It is common for '-shot' place names in Hampshire to contain a plant name as the first element (ALDERSHOT BRAMSHOTT), and this is what persuades Ekwall to suggest the first element is really Old English 'cenep'='moustache' used as a plant name. That is quite clearly what appears in the name of 'Kempley' (Gloucestershire). The plant name in question may alternatively be a loan from Latin 'cannabis'='hemp'. 'Sceat' often means 'corner' in the sense of a projection of one administrative unit into another (ALDERSHOT, GRAYSHOTT).
