ENHAM, two villages, one now a suburb of Andover
Probably hypothetical Old English 'Eanham'='lamb estate'. The hypothetical
word 'ean' is not on record, but the verb 'eanian'='to lamb' is found. Part of
Enham was in the royal estate of Andover, hence King's Enham (1379 'Enham
regis') and the rest a separate manor, held by Matthew de Columbers who died in
1273 seized of a knight's fee and a half, hence Knight's Enham (1316 'Ennam
militis' 1389 'Knyghtesenham'). The curious form in the time of Henry III
'Knythenesheneham' is hard to explain, but may in a garbled way suggest 'knight'
in the plural (early Middle English 'knightene' in the genitive case), with a
further '-s'.
Knight's Enham is now known as 'Enham Alamein'. A rehabilitation colony for
ex-servicemen was set up here after the Great War and reendowed after the second
World War as 'Alamein Village' by the government of Egypt in gratitude for the
defeat of the German army at El Alamein. The name of the place was changed
accordingly on the wave of postwar national sentiment.
