LANSDOWNE HILL in Southampton
Commemorates the second Marquis of Lansdowne (held the marquisate 1805-9), who developed the old castle site with a sham Gothic affair pulled down after his death. This event was among those marking the end of the pretensions of Southampton as a select spa; cf POLYGON.
