LAVERSTOKE
Hypothetical Old English 'Lafercestoc'='lark dependent farm'. In Old English the word for 'lark' unaccountably varies between 'laferce, laewerce' and 'lawerce'. We have the first here. A 'stoc' was a secondary or dependent settlement, sometimes having religious connections (cf Ekwall, the Dictionary of English Place Names: 443, Smith, English Place Name Elements II: 153-6), and in Middle English at the latest developing the more general meaning '(inhabited) place'. It is not known precisely what sense of 'stoc' is intended here. It is remarkable that the name seems to recur three further times: 'Laverstock' (Wiltshire) 'Laverkestoke/-stou' (now 'Langley' (Buckinghamshire)) and 'Lark Stoke' (Gloucestershire). One would expect the present name to be like the Gl one (cf the form of 1378); the pronunciation of the modern name seems to derive from the written tradition. There are several minor places called 'Larkwhistle' in Hampshire, eg in Wonston; the name is said to signify a lonely spot.
