LECKFORD
Ekwall, following Bradley (1928), guesses that there was an Old English word 'leaht'='irrigation channel, side channel', using comparative evidence from Flemish (cf the Belgian place name 'Anderlecht'). As such it would probably the ancestor of Modern English 'leet'. The Test flows in multiple streams here, and flooding is held in check by a complex array of sluices. It may well have been artificially controlled from a very early date.
A farm in the parish is occasionally referred to as 'Leckford Abbas'. This was a grange of St Mary's, Winchester, here (1563 'Lecforde Abbisse'). The masculine form 'Abbas' is misleading.
