LODDON, river
Since Ekwall (1928), said to be from a hypothetical British 'lutna (abona'='river' understood) 'muddy'. There are fair Celtic parallels, but no Romano British name certainly contains such a word and it has no existing derivatives in Welsh. If the 1272 spelling were correct, we would not hesitate to derive it from hypothetical Primitive Welsh 'lidan'='broad', topographically not unreasonable for parts of the river. But this spelling is isolated.
