LONGPARISH
The place was originally 'Middleton' first mentioned 1019 (14th century transcript) 'middel haema (mearc)'='near the boundary of the people of Middle(ton)', whose name survives as that of a hamlet in the parish. Three hamlets called 'tun' are strung out along the river Test: 'Easton' (1256 'Estetun')='east of the farm' or 'east farm' 'Middleton' and 'Forton' (1228 'Forton') 'ford farm'. The old name is thus self explanatory. Considering all this, the modern name is also self explanatory.
