commentary:	From Winchester Station 66 3/4 miles from London Waterloo, falling at 1 in 245, beside the River Itchen and the Itchen Navigation, through cuttings, past the location of the junction with the GWR line from the north, to Shawford Station at 69 miles; continue falling, later at 1 in 526, to Eastleigh Station at 73 miles, and railway works and freight yards; immediately there is the junction for the line to Gosport and Portsmouth etc; down to Swaythling Station; levelling out to St Denys's Station at 76 1/2 miles; to Northam Junction where the now main line turns westward to Southampton Central Station; the old main line went on to Southampton Terminus Station, and latterley to terminals at the docks on Southampton Water - Empress Dock, Ocean Dock and Ocean terminal. The old route closed to passengers 1966. Opened 10 June 1839.
