LYNDHURST
Hypothetical Old English 'Lindhyrst'='lime wood'. Other references to the tree can be found in this district, eg 'Linwood' in Broomy Walk (about 1170 'Lyndewode'), 'Linford' in Ringwood (961 'lind ford'). The native limes are 'almost absent from southern England' (Rackham 1980: 237), and have disappeared from Lyndhurst because of soil impoverishment or wood pasture effects in forest areas (Rackham 1980: 242). Lime tends to form stands, and Lyndhurst probably therefore had a lime wood rather than a wood with a prominent lime.
