MAPLEDURHAM, Domesday Book manor in Buriton
Hypothetical Old English 'Mapuldorham'='maple tree estate'. Maple is
widespread but not common in unmixed woods (Rackham 1980: 207), and prefers clay
soils (cf MAPLEHAM and MAPLEDURWELL) though Rackham says it is 'unusually and
significantly abundant in the coppices of those few forests that are on
calcareous soils'. Buriton is on the chalk. It is 'near its climatic limit' in
present day England. Its botanical record in ancient times is very thin, despite
often occurring in the charter and place name record. This place name recurs in
O.

Ray, Mary (Petersfield Museum): 1998: telephone conversation
There was a Mapledresham manor mentioned in Domesday; Mapledurham House,
elizabethan, was pulled down in 1829; the site is now pinned between modern road
and railway; there is still a Mapledurham Cottage on the site
