MAPLEDURWELL
Old English 'mapletree spring'. The river Lyde rises close to the church. Gover points out that the tree may be mentioned in the Old English bounds (1046) of the adjacent parish of Upton Grey, where we meet the phrase 'on mapoldre get'='to mapletree gate'. However this does not square with Grundy's topographical description (1927, under 'Upton Grey').
