MATLEY BOG in Denny
A peat bog in valley cut into the Barton Sands. Named from 'Matley Wood' (1270 'Mattele'). Perhaps 'Matta's wood', as Gover suggests, but possibly containing Old English 'meatte/-a'='mat', thus 'wood where rushes (for mats) were got'.
