Coates 1989 MEON, river, and hamlet in Titchfield The river name is obscure in origin, but probably related to that of the 'Main' in West Germany. The river gave its name to a provincia of the early English invaders (about 750 'meanuarorum prouincia; Meonware' meant 'dwellers at/by Meon'). The historical significance of this people has been much debated, as has their apparent affinity with Sussex. |
