MEON, river, and hamlet in Titchfield
The river name is obscure in origin, but probably related to that of the 'Main' in West Germany. The river gave its name to a provincia of the early English invaders (about 750 'meanuarorum prouincia; Meonware' meant 'dwellers at/by Meon'). The historical significance of this people has been much debated, as has their apparent affinity with Sussex.
