MICHELDEVER
To judge by the document of 901, the name is originally that of the river DEVER. If the name is English and means 'big Dever' (Old English 'mycel, micel') then the little Dever could be the little stream rising today near PRESTON CANDOVER. But probably Ekwall is right to draw attention to the earliest form with 'n' which suggests a hypothetical Primitive Welsh name 'Migndyfr' from hypothetical British 'Micnodubri'='bog waters', perhaps from the fact that the river flows into the marshes of the Test. In later times the name was certainly understood as containing Old English 'mycel' (1195 'Muchelediure'). The manor was held by Hyde Abbey from 901, hence 1167 'Micheldeura Abbatis'.
