MICHELMERSH
Hypothetical Old English '(se) mycla mersc'='(the) big marsh', referring to the wetland at the confluence of the Test and Dun. In the same parish is 'Stonymarsh' (OS 1 to 50000 map). Winchester documents of the late 12th or 13th century show French influenced spellings like 1171 'Muchelmareis' 1243 'Mychelemarays' where OF 'mareis'='marsh' is substituted for the related English word. The name is most unusual in not having become hypothetical '-marsh' in Modern English, though this form is recorded sporadically (eg 1817).
