MONK SHERBORNE
Old English 'bright stream'; but see the discussion under SHERBORNE ST JOHN. A priory was founded here in the time of Henry I, and the monks are commemorated in the feudal specifier in Latin, Middle English and French: 1278 'Syrburne Monachorum' 1306 'Monkeneschirbourne' 1332 'Shirebourn Moygnes'. At the turn of the 13th/14th century it is found as Dean's Sherborne ('Schirebourne Decani'). All these devices, and the form 1330 'Westshyrebourn' are to distinguish it from SHERBORNE ST JOHN, from which it is divided by the Roman road (Margary 42a) from Silchester to Winchester. The two may have once formed a single unit.
