MOORDOWN, suburb of Bournemouth, now in Dorset
Apparently Old English/Middle English 'moor valley', but the topography suggests 'moor hill', ie: as does the modern form of the name. It is not possible to decide whether the local word 'moor(e)'='tree stump' (cf Cope 1883: 59) is involved.
