MORTIMER WEST END, formerly in Berkshire
The former west end of Stratfield Mortimer parish in Berkshire. Gelling, in Place Names of Berkshire, reports that the local name is just 'Mortimer' and this accounts for the form of the Hampshire portion's name and of a large secondary settlement in the Berkshire place itself. The manor was held by Ralf Mortimer in 1086. The area called 'Stratfield' clearly straddled the present line of the county boundary; the Mortimer manor is in Berkshire, STRATFIELD TURGIS and SAYE are in Ha. For comparison, note what is said under CLERE and SHERFIELD-ON-LODDON.
