The name of the river 'Mude' is not found till 1859 ('Mudey'), so the place name is primary. 'Muddy ford'. The river was clearly an obstacle to travel, because the name of the adjacent 'Somerford' implies 'ford useable in the summer' (in the time of Henry II 'Sumerford').
