WALLOP (NETHER and OVER), two parishes/manors
This is a most difficult name. It appears to contain Old English 'hop'='constricted valley' (cf Gelling 1984: 112), and if so it is the only place name south of the Thames to contain the word in this sense. Gelling wonders if a colony of Midlanders was responsible. In some desperation Ekwall postulated a form of hypothetical 'wiellhop'='stream valley' that must date from before the time of 'i-' umlaut, ie: probably before about 550, viz. an established hypothetical compound 'weallhop' where the [j] triggering 'i-' umlaut had been lost. Gelling (loc cit) also notes that 'weall' would not be expected in Hampshire. Rather perhaps it is a name of pre-English origin. There was a correspondence in Antiquity in the 1930's, culminating in an article by Jackson (1939), associating Wallop with 'guoloppvm, id est cat guoloph' in the Welsh Annals
