Coates 1989 NETLEY MARSH It is now customary to associate the form in the Old English Chronicle (A- and E- versions) with this place, despite the implication that the name went underground for 700 years. Certainly hypothetical 'Natan leah' cannot have been far from here if 'Cerdicesford/Certicesford' in the same annal refers to CHARFORD. The story the Chronicle gives for the name is pure fabrication, however; the annalist says the name is that of a Welsh king called 'Natanleod, Nazaleod' who was killed here with 5000 men by Cerdic and Cynric, 'in consequence of which the district was called Natanleag/Nazanleog ...'. This is not a W personal name but the name of a wood, 'wet wood', like NATELEY. 'Netley Marsh' appears as such on maps from 1759. |
