NETLEY in Hound
Ekwall, in the Dictionary of English Place Names suggests a compound of Old English 'laete'='neglected, abandoned' and 'leah'='clearing, wood'. A persistent medieval spelling tradition with two 't's suggests rather a first element 'laett'='lath', thus 'wood where laths were got' (cf SPARSHOLT). The former tradition seems earlier. Forms in 'n' do not appear till the 14th century, possibly as a result of confusion with NETLEY MARSH about 7 miles away (more if not as the crow flies); but simple dissimilation of 'l...l...' is probable. The original village site is at 'Old Netley'.
