NEWNHAM
Hypothetical Old English 'Niwan ham' (oblique case form of) '(the) new estate'. The various places called 'Newnham' and the like are distributed rather further west than the bulk of the other names in 'ham' (eg 'Nuneham Courtenay' (Oxfxordshire)), suggesting that the name functioned more or less as an established lexical expression for a new estate. The manor farm of this Newnham is on a raised patch of Lower Bagshot Sand in the surrounding clay, with easy to work Frilford association soils. Since the claylands are none too hospitable, there is a clear suggestion in the name that this was a settlement on more marginal land under pressure of population growth in mid Saxon times.
