NEWTON VALENCE
Old English 'new farm'. In 1250 it was held by William de Valencia, hence the manorial element. William's family presumably hailed from 'Valence' in Seine-et-Marne (Normandy). That it is a late foundation could be inferred from the fact that the village is on a hill capped with Clay-with-flints; marginal land at the best of times. Of nearby presumably ancient villages only West Tisted and Medstead are situated on this formation.
