BOARHUNT, parish and two manors (EAST and WEST), (NORTH) BOARHUNT
Hypothetical Old English 'Byrhfunta'='spring of or at the fortification'. The
spring is that at 'Offwell Farm' whose name also contains a reference to it.
'Funta' is taken to testify to signs of Roman activity (see HAVANT). The modern
pronunciation is shown by forms like 'Burrant(e)' to date from at least the 16th
century.
