HAYLING ISLAND, NORTH and SOUTH HAYLING
The island was originally hypothetical Old English 'Haegelinga eg'='island of
the Haegelingas'. This seems to have been a folk name based on a dubious,
unattested, personal name 'Haegel'. (This, if real, might have been a pet form
of one of the men's names in 'Heah-' if the analogy of 'Baeddi' for a 'Beadu-'
name is a good one.) The form 'Hailinges' suggests either that the folk name
denoted the place, as in the case of 'Hastings' (Sussex); or that the place was
named in the plural in Middle English for the two parishes of Hayling, called in
medieval times 'Northwode' and 'Southwode'. The disappearance of the woodland
may account for the modern replacement names 'North' and 'South
Hayling'.
