ODIHAM The second form, from the Laud MS. of the Old English Chronicle gives
the clue that this is hypothetical Old English 'Wudigham'='wooded estate'.
'Hamm' is unlikely; it is not a classic 'hamm' site and was a royal domain
before 1066, strengthening the probability of 'ham'.

Odiam or Odiham, a small Market-Town, where was formerly a strong Castle and
a Royal Palace. ...
This Place is famous for giving Birth to Mr. William Lily, who wrote the
Grammar; which, with some Alterations, is commanded by Act of Parliament in King
Henry VIII's Reign, to be taught in all Schools. He died master of St. Paul's
School, London, Anno 1522.
The Market here is on Saturdays weekly, and the Fair on [ ] yearly.

Odiam, seated on the Road, a Borough Corporate, in former time belonging to
the Bishops of Winchester; and of note for being the place where King David the
second of Scotland was kept a prisoner; the Town is not large, but its Market,
since it was changed from Fridays to Saturdays, is pretty well served with
provisions.
