BASING or OLD BASING
Hypothetical Old English 'Basingas' an Old English folk name based on the hypothetical personal name 'Basa' not in evidence in Old English records but which has a secure parallel in continental Germanic. Its existence must be assumed to handle place names like 'Basford' (Nt) and probably 'Bassingbourn' (C); and according to Copley (1954: 125) also the old name of Ankerwyke (Bk).
