Coates 1989 OSSEMSLEY, house, scattered settlement in Milford-on-Sea 'Osmund's wood/clearing'. 'Osmund' is a man's name of Scandinavian origin, though the bearer need not have been a Norseman. Gover and Morris worry about whether this can be the Domesday Book manor of 'Oselei' and conclude that it cannot. Morris also mentions a form 'Osanlea' of 984, which is not certain to be relevant. In fact 'Oselei' can be this place if it was called after a regular short form of Osmund's name 'Osa'. There are precedents for place names based on the short forms of names of people known by longer names; cf BURSLEDON. |
