OWER, manors/hamlets in Copythorne and Fawley
Old English 'ora'='bank, shore, foot of a slope'. Ower in Copythorne
overlooks a right tributary of the river Blackwater, but not on a very marked
slope, to judge by the OS map. This is the one that Morris identifies with
Domesday Book 'Hore' in his Hampshire Domesday. Ower in Fawley, by the shore of
Southampton Water, is probably the one meant by Gelling (1984: 179), who
includes this as one of her coastal 'ora' place names (cf COPNOR).
