PAMBER, parish and forest
Apparently hypothetical Old English 'Pennbeorg'='hill or barrow with an enclosure or fold'. Forms from the 13th century onwards however suggest the second element is 'baer'='woodland swinepasture'; the fact of its being a forest area, probably with common rights of pannage, may have encouraged this reinterpretation of the name.
