Coates 1989 PARK FARM, Beaulieu, Domesday Book manor of THROUGHAM Hypothetical Old English 'Thruhham'='trough or conduit estate', or perhaps the second element is 'hamm' in this case land surrounded by former marsh, a Dodgson 'hamm-2a'. The 'thruh' would presumably have been for drainage. (The word could also mean 'coffin'.) 'Park Farm' is on the S fringe of the former estate, which, when emparked, was known as 1547 'Trougham Parke' or 1606 'Beauley Parke'. The Domesday Book manor was held by a man named 'Colgrin; Colgrimesmore' (displaying the correct form of the name) is found in Beaulieu in about 1210. |
