PENTON GRAFTON, part-manor, hamlet in Weyhill
That part of PENTON manor not held by the Meisys, but by the abbey of Grestain in Normandy (so in Domesday Book; 1167 'Peninton Abbatis'). There is a persistent spelling tradition with 'f' for 's' eg 1316 'Croftyn' though Gover says that this 'must be a late mistake due to mis-reading of the 17th and early 18th century printed 's'. The prominence as landowners of the Earls of Grafton may have had something to do with the association; or there has been an association with the 'Grafton' villages 9 miles NW in Wiltshire.
