Coates 1989 PICKET PIECE, suburb of Andover OS 1 to 50000 map. This appears to contain a field name including Middle English 'piked'='pointed' (cf Hampshire dialect 'peaked' (Cope 1883: 65)), possibly alluding to the tapering piece of land between the two converging roads to Whitchurch. This name and the 1m. distant 'Picket Twenty Farm' may have influenced each other. This extraordinary name is 1826 'Pickiltrenthay Farm' possibly corrupt (and euphemistic) for 'Piddletrenthide' in Dorset; but the connection is obscure. |
