PILLEY, farm and hamlet in Boldre
Hypothetical Old English 'Pilaleah'='wood where shafts or piles were got', cf 'Pylewell' (1609 'Pilewells') in the same parish. Or perhaps the first element is 'pyll'='tidal creek', typical of the WCy but found in minor names as far East as Sussex. Pilley and Pylewell are between the Lymington river and a watercourse that may well have been tidal before it was regulated to form a feature in the grounds of Pylewell. This latter possibility could not account for 'Pilmore Gate' (1331 'Pillemore') in Minstead, far inland. There is also an unexplained modern 'Pill Heath' in Hurstbourne Tarrant. This place was resettled from the cleared Domesday Book village of 'Pisteslei'. It is unclear whether the names are connected. The Domesday Book name may be hypothetical 'Pisestedesleah'='clearing of Pisestede' this being 'pea place', cf BINSTEAD.
